Windows phone's only have h.264 support too.* IPhones have only ever had h.264 hardware support. Google, Samsung, LG, Sony, and MS are also part of the h.264 pool.Īlmost all android phones, and all popular android phones have had both webm and h.264 hardware support for at least the last 5 years. Non-commercial use is free.Īpple is part of the h.264 patent pool and receives royalties from h.264 licences, including some of the money that Cisco pays for its openH264 users. Without going through Cisco you must pay license fees for commercial use of h.264. Given this they don't guarantee that you will be covered in all h.264 use cases. Cisco didn't make it free to use, instead it is just eating the licensing costs for end users if you use their implementation of h.264. H.264 is sort of open source and sort of free to use for anything. VP8 is totally open source and free to use for anything. H.265 and VP9 are essentially equals too. Neither is overwhelming superior in any technical way. H.264 and webm are about equal in all aspects. I will use the term webm as a place holder for vp8/9. How about we take a slightly less biased approached in a simple facts stated format. And try explaining to Apple, or any manufacturer, why they should include vp8(webm) hardware decode support when it offers nothing over what we already have outside of a petty agenda. TL DR - Don't expect to see native safari support until we get native hardware decoder support. I'm against the tactics being used on both sides to artificially garner support for these formats. MP4/h.264 has far more hardware decoder support and is more efficient with better quality at similar or better bit rates. Now if Google would only FOLLOW THE WEBRTC STANDARD and push h.264 to applicable clients, devices would last more than 8mins because of the lack of webm/vp8 harder decoders. This allowed Cisco to step in and help us all out. See Google tries to set rules that forced thiers as the only high performance codec able to be used for webrtc. Or oh no google says Webrtc use is restricted. And there were already plenty of things like x.264 (a free encoder) The cost was in licensing that had zero to do with anything a consumer would have to deal with. 1)there was never any cost for users so that was bullshit. It just needs to mature.Īnd before anyone talks about "costs". As webm catches up with it's hype with support, we will see something I'm sure. But no one talks about that shitty move.Īlso keep in mind that while webm is nice, it offers nothing over MP4 (h.264) which already has near 100% user support and near 100% hardware decoding support on modern hardware.īut again. Keep in mind that Google forces vp8 (what's inside webm) in hangouts out of pure principle and my cpu suffers dearly. Even on modern hardware (even outside of Apple hardware) It will get better as it matures. There's near zero hardware decoder support. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
